Swelling in the ball of foot is a common sign you may have a plantar plate tear. Common incidents that we see contribute to plantar plate tears are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Slipping on loose rocks whilst trail running<\/li>\n<li>Climbing stairs<\/li>\n<li>Running steep hill repetitions<\/li>\n<li>Repetitive burpies<\/li>\n<li>Skipping<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5019\" src=\"http:\/\/intraining.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/Tinglingtoes2.jpg\" alt=\"Tinglingtoes2\" width=\"264\" height=\"191\">Each of these activities can hyper-extend the forefoot and can lead to plantar plate tear. Whilst not the sole cause, bio-mechanical issues are often a contributing factor to plantar plate tears, usually as a result of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Instability of the foot<\/li>\n<li>Excess force placed at the ball of the foot during toe of<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How to diagnose a plantar plate tear?<\/h3>\n<p>Diagnosis for plantar plate tears is best seen on MRI. The MRI will determine the presence of the tear and can help differentiate this injury with those listed above and any other possible diagnoses.<\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5033\" src=\"http:\/\/intraining.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/PlantarPlatetear-300x236.jpg\" alt=\"PlantarPlatetear\" width=\"300\" height=\"236\">How to treat a plantar plate tear<\/h3>\n<p>Treatment for plantar plate tears needs to be done with a podiatrist initially to offload the injured plate and to correct bio-mechanical issues. Runners need to stay off hills until there is no pain.
